“we are what you think we are” is the tenth dispatch from the crew here at lost soul enterprises, new york city, usa. this compilation features a whopping 15 artists who together represent all corners of the label’s extended family, with frequent local collaborators paired with past guests of our various parties. it is served with love from us to you on 3 slabs of vinyl released in 3 installments.
each installment charts a different component of our sound: 10.1 highlights the influences of synthwave and postpunk electronics, 10.2 is comprised of razor-sharp acid and overdriven electro, and 10.3 delves into darker shades of industrial techno. together, all of these elements loosely sketch our little corner of the sonic universe. with this humble offering we tried to capture and share with you a little sliver of what we’ve found together in hazy rooms full of flashing lights and strange sounds.

live at the apollo, volume ii by james brown and the famous flames was originally released in august 1968. a follow-up to the original 1963 album live at the apollo it too was recorded in new york at the apollo theater in harlem. this deluxe edition features a more expanded live set including 19 minute version of “it’s a man’s man’s man’s world”.

from 4lux to ten thousand yen, earl jeffers has been serving up plenty of upfront good time house music over the past few years, as well as steering the equally on point chesus alias. now he sidles over to the new melange label with byron the aquarius in tow, and the sun kissed vibes are positively pouring out of the record grooves. eira is where byron flexes some on-point melodic input, laying down ludicrously rich keys to ramp up the soul status of this damn fine garage-y bumper. the demo mix of eira resides on the flip and shows off a more stripped down, raw version that s no less satisfying on the ears.

although not a band in a traditional sense of the word, this record was created by a rotating ensemble of players: for a brief moment, musicians from different backgrounds (in this iteration: preslav, kenny peagler, waajeed, joe defazio and phil boyd) became a band and then went their separate ways. rhodes, funk basslines, neo-soul chords and tight drum programming are the lingua franca of the 24 hour band. the title of each song represents the time of day that inspired it and collectively, they point to the goal to create records that can be enjoyed not just in a club, but throughout the day, at home, or in your car. this is the 24hr band.

pablo cahn is a talented producer hailing from and currently residing in bogota, colombia. “soul rain” is his third release on cadenza, and it comes with a massive remix by the spanish don paco osuna. the original mix of pablo is a long attractive dance floor tune textured by an overwhelming bass line and a deluge of vocal grains that shapes a large number of fills and break downs all over the track. as the journey go further, a complex twist of harmonies and resonances arise from the rhythmic grounds, shining over a blissful body of beats. paco osuna’s remix recap all the rhythmic elements and shrink the vocal drizzle maintaining their relevance to the building of the track. the bare inter-twin of its relentless bass line and its stinging hi-hats works out a magnificent outbreak of the dense original tissue of chords.

ursa’s reef is a late 80’s traveller and surfer wandering endlessly in the secluded raves of goa, searching for his own soul while dancing in abandon to the proto-trance journeys of goa gil. brought up in sintra, portugal, by a family of uptight catholic hypocrites, ur goes rogue in his early 20’s, seduced by the esoteric teachings of levi, pessoa, crowley and israel regardie while keeping an unhealthy obsession with roxy music. he is also a fictional, made up persona - a musical heteronym - of lisbon-based dj and producer marco rodrigues, mostly known for his work under the name photonz. together with his friend jose acid - a musical heteronym of joao ervedosa aka shcuro - he makes one last trip to goa that could prove fatal.

originally released in 1979, blood a go run is a heavyweight roots reggae tune sung by obscure artist leroy brown and backed by famous soul syndicate band. this is a timeless roots rock reggae recorded and mixed at king tubbys studio in jamaica. blood ago run when you play dis ya one!

the title track, “blackbird”, has received support from ltj bukem and many other top deejays around the world. the song starts off with a heavy amen break and light background atmospherics. at each turn, the break seems to get heavier as layers are added to the mix. when the bassline drops, the groove is undeniable, and will have your head nodding in approval. the song chugs along and builds to a crescendo with it s epic pads and tasteful atmospherics.
“bella l’amore”, is the second offering, and it shows a different side to blade s diverse productions. the track begins with a light break, airy efx, and chiming keys, that set the backdrop for this tight production. at the drop, the drums fill in nicely and the warm 808 bassline punch through the mix. overall, blade delivers big on this release, and will surely satisfy his fans with this slice of d&b heaven.

nice price deal !!! the title track of this ep is the bouncy stepper >last march<. a snarling, distorted bassline has meant that this tune has found favour with numerous a-listers in recent times and is a worthy tune for the ep to be named after. on the flip, is the ferocious >disaffected<. eeerie pads and atmospheres make way for a driving drum loop and sub bass before all hell breaks loose at the drop with one of the nastiest, most twisted reese basslines heard for a very long time. the influence of labels such as the aforementioned renegade hardware is obvious, and it is one of, if not the, most ferocious and devastating slice of d&b ever to grace dsm.

the checkerboard squares’ ‘double cookin’’ is a byword for the northern soul all-nighters of the 70s, when hundreds of dancers would hit the beat and clap in unison to the spirited instrumental. our discovery of two vocal versions of the song shook the rare soul world in the noughties. here we feature the tandels’ all-girl take on a song they had previously recorded to a more basic arrangement on the obscure jam-cha label.

we have already released the longer version of the northern classic ‘gone with the wind is my love’, but this kent 45 of rita & the tiaras’ masterpiece is the first time we have issued the doré single as it was originally put out. on the flip is the glorious instrumental version for lovers of that la orchestral soul sound.

chicano soul floaters have to be one of the smaller sub genres of my disco collecting but nubia is probably the best example out there. we managed to get the master tapes from writer george rivera so it sounds as good as the day it was recording, bring some floaty sunny soul to your dancefloors â&#128,&#147, 500 only.

the voices of east harlem were an ensemble of vocalists who for just sunshine records recorded two albums under the direction of leroy hutson and curtis mayfield. “cashing in” is one of their most classic songs, a highly sought after track on original 7” fetches between £40 and £80 on the collectors market. first recorded and released in 1973 it has all the hallmarks of a leroy hutson composition and an established audience that crosses the boundaries of northern, crossover and modern soul. the song is coupled here with “take a stand”, another highly regarded and sought after modern soul room dance floor tracks, never previously released on 7” single until now
